Having removed all of the screws and access panels I was met with lots of wires, non of which looked damaged. The advice that I had read was to cut the wires from the tailgate and pull back in to the car boot area for inspection. I'm afraid the my auto electrics confidence does not go that far especially when the next step was to extend and re solder the wires!
Auto electrictrian to be contacted soon....Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-84109883460666121012012-06-15T09:53:00.003-07:002012-06-15T09:53:53.906-07:00Project E61 beginsSo, now time to fix this e61 back up. List of issues to fix are:

1. Rear wiper does not work, this is a well known issue connected to the tailgate wiring loom

2. New front OS tire. Front tires are std and rears run flats. Is this an MOT fail?

3. Rear OS parking sensor not working, could connected to the loom issues.

4. Front suspension noises

5. MOT
After removing the turbo pipe and engine cover I found pools of oil on the rocker cover, then also down in the spark plug holes.
I cleaned up the oils check on the ploughs and refitted. Started the engine to a cloud of white smoke, I guess some of the oil got down in to the combustion chambers!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-39066197406495189722012-06-13T03:58:00.000-07:002012-06-13T04:08:12.079-07:00Hello V70 T5About a month or so ago I finally had enough of the E61 and when on to ebay a purchased another car. Meant to be an interim runner while the BMW is fixed up and moved on she looks to be a keeper... until she proves me wrong.

So the spec;

2001 V70 T5 Manual in blue with black leather. Not much more to mention but 156600 on the clock when purchased and a sunroof!

So far I have travelled 1000 miles with an average of 26mpg around town and 32.4mpg on the motorway. This compares to the E61 525d favourably as it was showing 22mpg around town and 38mpg on the motorway. Once factor to think about is that petrol is 6.5% cheaper than diesel in the UK.

So far so good, new tires required on the front and perhaps a small amount of front suspension work. Not too bacd for 1350gbp.

There are also fumes leaking into the cabin again, suspected exhaust manifold leak.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-16837423747757220752011-09-01T04:33:00.000-07:002011-09-01T04:52:30.731-07:00Volvo binned!So, the D5 has been traded (172000), the Five is here. What a disaster.
Having handed over serious wads of cash I am left with what seems to be a dog.

Jobs to complete;

Brakes all round
Exhaust manifold repair
Heater plugs
Front O/S wishbone
Front tyres
Central locking fault

So the purchase price was ok, the mileage was at 139k at purchase.

Brakes have been changed the manifold has been welded and we have just completed server trips around europe;

1. London to Devon (400 miles)
2. London to Bolton (500 miles)
3. London to Bergerac (France) (1400 miles)

Overall the E61 now stands at 142000 miles.

Its the 1st of September, the autum is coming in hard. Lets see how it fairs in the months to come. Any more problems and its likley to be traded!

The boot decided to lock itself and not open, luckly there is a manuel key release hidden underneath

2. Autmatic transmission service required. I checked the ATF, then the fault dissapeard.

So, we almost hit 166k the old girl did us well, but will she remain to be the car of choice or will I be forced to replace her with a newer model by the wife?

Remains to be seen.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-54614746969336169392010-06-25T05:09:00.001-07:002010-06-25T05:12:51.771-07:00Now at 163.500, not really using the car much these days as I am commuting by train in to the city. Had a disaster lastweek, rear tire puncher and nort repairable. Two front tyres also need replacement.

So four new tyres and an aircon recharge... bang £400.

So te quesiton;

What tyres to use?
Go budget?
Go premium?
or go for the middle ground?

I got 16k out of the fronts - Pirelli p6000's. Not good.

No have somthing called Arrowspeeds... I dont hold out for them, but it would be good to see atleast 20k.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-72356168110363594752010-03-09T13:06:00.001-08:002010-03-09T13:15:22.267-08:00Now at 160350, and it been just over 1k since the last service. I noticed that the engine tone changed after 200 miles, does oil take this long to bed in?

Averaging about 45 mpg combined, not bad but I prefer to see 60mpg having done a long run.

Last week I changed the rear brakes on another S60 that I own, its a 2001 2.0 turbo with 119k.

Apparently the rear beake shoe delaminate and can cause damage to the hub assembly. See here for details; http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=89899

If you have an S60/V70/S80 now might be the time to check them out. Other that potential delamination probles the only other problem seems to be the dam retaining springs for the rear shoes. Here comes the best bit, they seem to always brake or bend when being taken off and cost £4 each to replace from Volvo! Its got a faulty injector clunky auto transmission and suspension knocks. The question is do you spend out £££ on fixing or pass over to the next guy cheap? The real question is "whats the cost to change"

The way that I look at it is, you have a number of factors to consider;

Purchase price of the current car

Lenght of time invested in the car

Age of the car

Service history completed

Pending service jobs

Pending repairs.

Realistic selling price

Cost of new vehicle

The way in which the new car is finance (Bank loan, cash, finance, lease, PCP)

The cost of the money to finance the purchace (APR, lost interest in savings etc.)

Costs to service new car

Depreciation of new car v's repairs of current car

Take all of these items into account, and then realize that it's better the devil you know, unless you can affort the brand new car....

Keep the S60 until the big 200kUnknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5912790370380478955.post-38343637821135386842010-02-07T13:38:00.000-08:002010-02-07T14:02:23.780-08:00The London Black CabWhat is it with these old things? They shack, rattle and role all over the place but people are still loyal to them. Classic in shape yes they are, but built well they arte not, rust after just a couple of years on the body panels, trim falling off and lots of chocking diesel smoke.

So what mileage are we to expect from these old black cabs? 200, 300 0r even 400k?

Since the 2006 joint venture between Maganese Bronze and Geely has the quality dropped or increased?
